What is a Hoverboard?

A hoverboard or a self-balancing scooter is a levitating device that you can ride on any surface with a firm grip. It comes with a rechargeable battery that you can charge after every few hours. You can levitate with the help of a gyroscope and tough rubber tires.

The wheels are durable and can move on any surface. You don’t have to work with the steering to change directions. Just give your hoverboard a signal with your feet, and they’ll do whatever you command!

And the fascinating thing is, you can even burn calories with it! Isn’t it exciting? Though the number varies, who knew hoverboarding is both fun and healthy?

Now, look at calibrating and things to know before calibrating your hoverboard! Don’t worry, as I will not bore you with all the long safety measures and procedures.

Why Calibrating a Hoverboard Essential?

While reading all the above articles, anyone would think, why do all that is essential? Why am I focusing on calibrating your hoverboard so much?

Don’t think too hard, as I came up with a detailed answer. I am sure it will solve all your issues and help you do it.

The first thing to know is, that calibration will help your hoverboard’s gyroscope. Before that, keep this one thing in mind.

You can only ride on a hoverboard safely if you stay upright and never tilt. And for this, gyroscopes are here for your help.

Now, back to the topic. So, when we tilt our feet to give direction, tilt sensors in wheels send messages to the gyroscope. And without falling or losing balance, we can steer without any extra attachment.

But, when we start losing balance, it is time to calibrate our hoverboard!

Secondly, if you face any issue with the overall work, we know what to do. Just calibrate it, and you are good to go!

When to Calibrate your Hoverboard?

We know why calibrating a hoverboard is essential. But how can we say this is the right time to do it? I know this is something that will confuse you. Right? Just like I said, we got your every solution. So let’s get into it.

  • When your hoverboard is out of balance and can’t stand upright, I’d say it is time to give it a little restart.
  • When your hoverboard makes weird noises and stutters with every few miles of the ride, go for the kick it needs!
  • When your hoverboard stops working after a few miles of working, make sure you calibrate it.
  • When your speed feels a little lower than usual, I recommend a refresh.
  • When your hoverboard feels tilted towards one side and can’t move properly, go for it right away.
  • When your hoverboard flashes red light, and you can’t work with it, it is also the time to refresh it.

Now you know, with these problems, you don’t need to open up your hoverboard. Just follow the below steps to calibrate the device. And have a fresh, new self-balancing scooter on the table!

Step-By-Step Tutorial on Calibrating your Hoverboard

Now, we are here what you guys have been waiting for since the start. Yes, we will have a look at how to calibrate a hoverboard. So, without wasting a second, let’s get going!

Turning off the Hoverboard:

You may find this unimportant, but in my opinion, it is one of the most vital steps in calibrating.

  • Always turn off your hoverboard from the button on it.
  • Never switch it to sleep mode by using a remote. It will drastically affect your hoverboard.

With the help of a silver button, power it off completely and save yourself from further complications.

Accurate Leveling:

One thing to know is that the surface you will keep your hoverboard on when calibration is essential. It will determine the accurate balancing according to your terrain.

The tip to do it flawlessly is, always keep it upside down. Foot pedals will help you level your hoverboard. And it will, in return, get you the accuracy in balancing.

Calibrating Process:

Now comes the best part. You must be thinking it’s terrifying, but trust me, it’s not.

Press and hold the main button for a few seconds (preferably at least 5 to 10 seconds). The time varies with different models. So make sure what type you are using.

After pressing it for a particular time, you will hear a beep. You can also see the flash of your LED Lights. When this happens, you are almost there. At this point, you can let that button go.

Turning on your Hoverboard:

Now, after 30 seconds, you can turn your hoverboard back on. During this time, the calibration process was processed and completed by now.

In the meanwhile, make sure you don’t disturb your hoverboard, or you’ll end up troubling the calibration.

Testing the Calibration:

Now it’s time for the testing. Turn your hoverboard on and do a few test rides. Go forward and backward, and don’t forget to give little twirls and tilts for better results.

If these results satisfy you, then well and good, and If not, then no problem!

You can repeat the process three times until you get the desirable results.

Even after the third time you feel misbalance, you should consult a professional. Your hoverboard can have a technical issue that needs an expert’s attention. So, stop recalibrating when you find no solution.

One Important Tip:

Make sure you read the instruction manual of your model before calibrating. Though the instructions will be more or less the same, it’s better to check before the procedure. If you don’t have a physical copy, don’t worry, and download the one online!

How to Calibrate with your Mobile App?

Some hoverboards can connect to your phone with Bluetooth. They can also have a separate mobile app for their control. So, you must be thinking, can we calibrate it with the mobile app? Yes, Right?

Calibration through the mobile app is just as easy as doing it manually. You have to follow almost the similar steps as above. So let’s have a quick review of smartphone calibration.

  • Connect your hoverboard to your mobile app.
  • To level both ends, lay the hoverboard flat on the surface.
  • Go to your app, and find the “Calibrate the Unit” option.
  • Follow the app guidelines to calibrate your hoverboard.
  • Power your hoverboard with the button.
  • You wait for 10 seconds and then turn it on again.

After turning on the hoverboard, your hoverboard will be good to run. Just make sure you do the test runs before calling it a day.

Note: If you don’t follow the guidelines, your results will suffer and ultimately harm your hoverboard. So follow each step accurately and with patience.

How to Calibrate a Bluetooth Hoverboard?

If you have a Bluetooth hoverboard and want to calibrate it, make sure you read the points below.

  • First thing, it’s easier and less risky to calibrate a non-Bluetooth hoverboard by yourself.
  • You can calibrate it by using the same steps as of Non-Bluetooth one.
  • When working on a Bluetooth scooter, you can burn the chip inside it.
  • You should always prefer professional help when trying to calibrate.
  • Go for in-home calibration only if you have a warranty.

Though it is possible, I’d recommend not to do it yourself. Your little mistake can cause drastic effects on your Bluetooth hoverboard. And I am not exaggerating!

How to Calibrate with a Hoverboard Remote?

First, you should know every hoverboard comes with a remote. You can turn it on or off with it. But one thing to keep in mind is that it never powers off your hoverboard.

You can switch it to sleep mode but not permanently power it off.

With that said, remember one more thing. Almost 75 percent of hoverboard owners are kids ranging from 9 to 15 years of age.

So, what’s the point of telling all that? The answer is quite simple. Switching to sleep mode is the worst thing you can do to your hoverboard during its calibration.

It must be utterly powered off, or else you’ll face problems afterward.

So, using a remote for calibration is not such a good idea. Try to avoid it as much as you can.

Though there are still a few models in the market that comes with a specific hoverboard remote. With this remote, you can calibrate your hoverboard by pressing particular buttons.

Just read the manual beforehand and get the desired results afterward.

Diagnosis of another Problem:

We know the foremost step after calibration of your hoverboard is testing. Right? Without it, we can’t exactly say that your self-balancing scooter is good to go.

Turn on both sides to check the relative speed, take a spin, and don’t forget to test the maximum speed.

And after that, you still find issues. And your red light is still on, Sorry but you have some other issues. Now, it’s time to either replace the gyroscope or the internal circuits. Let’s have a look at some solutions.

  • You can open the scooter’s frame and check for any loose wires. Repairing it will for sure do some good.
  • If that doesn’t work either, you can replace your gyroscope. So how to look for it in different models? Just check the below points and find the one that fits you well.
6.5 inches Hoverboard:

On a 6.5 inches hoverboard, you can find Lights in front of both sides. If any of these lights are still on, change the gyroscope of that side.

8 inches Hoverboard:

On an 8 inches hoverboard, you can find LED lights on top of both wheels. If any of the lights are still on, it means it doesn’t balance right. And now it’s time to change the gyroscope of that side.

10 inches Hoverboard:

On a 10 inches hoverboard, you can find LED lights on both front and back. And if any side has a lost balance, both these LEDs will light on. So, we know it’s time to change the gyroscope.
